Foulard dress

e volevo buttarlo perché era vecchio e ingiallito.

I was trying to make order in a box of old clothes
and I found this pure silk scarf.

I dont't remember to which grandma or aunt did it belong,
and I wanted to throw it away because it was old and yellowish.

But I liked the fantasy and quality of the fabric
so I decided to wash it...
Stains were gone and as I stared at it
wondering what to do I realized it could become only ...

  a dress!

***
I washed the scarf
I created the pattern (center in the picture above)
and I used a really nice piece of dark brown taffeta
to complete the dress behind

***
I liked the idea of keeping the "pure silk" brand
originally attached in one of the angles of the foulard
so I stitched it near the strap
to add an extra touch of "oldness".

Marbled blouse

e modificato l'abbottonatura in basso.

***

I found this blouse at the flea market some time ago.
It was very old fashioned
but I fell in love with the fabric it was made of  so I had to buy it.

turned the front into the back,
cut off the sleeves,
applied a rubber band in the armholes
and modified the lower part of the button placket.

(antichi romani, cinesi,
in indiani, giapponesi, persiani e turchi.

I will always insist on the beauty and quality of vintage fabrics.

Today we buy garments often made with toxic materials and dyes,
or that last very little and have a poor quality,
while we throw away clothes made from beautiful old fabrics,
just because the line is old fashioned.

In this case the fabric pattern made me think of paper marbling,
a technique we all have seen, and that has been practiced by different cultures since ancient times

(by the romans, chinese, indians, japanese, ersians and Turkish.
It was also used in the Renaissance,
then in the seventeenth century and in the twentieth century thanks to Art Nouveau)

Vintage dresses refashioned

[Antiche maioliche siciliane]

Mentre quello a sinistra l'ho semplicemente modificato

A taste of Sicily

in these two vintage dresses

that once belonged to my great-aunt.

[I had mentioned her in a previous post].

Before the war she married a sicilian colonel and moved to Sicily,

where she lived for many years.

She left me her dresses but also

beautiful memories of this wonderful and intense island.

The blu-white dress in the right picture was radically modified:
I had to completely take it to pieces and remake it.
While for the one in the left picture
I just had to modify the size and proportions (front/back panels and sleeves).

Before getting rid of those granny dresses think it twice!
they might seem old and shapeless,
but they always hide a big potential.

Two-flowered dress

Fiori applicati fatti a mano.
Comodo, ma femminile...

Dress made from stretch fabric, with drapes in the waist and shoulder. Hand made flowers.
Comfortable, but still feminine...

Exercise in style

This is literally a "style exercise" I did for my school lessons.
A woolen top with four inclined darts in the front. I found them awesome in fact they fit  the body perfectly .

Dress

Asymmetrical top

Top asimmetrico in taffetà sintetico.

 ho voluto provarlo...

I must say that it was done with someone else's body measures, but even if it was not mine.... I wanted to try it...

Sudden  inspiration

The inspiration for this jersey dress came to me inmediatly when I saw the fabric in the shop window.
This is a classic striped suit that calls to mind summer and the sea.

From skirt to dress

This was a Luisa Spagnoli vintage plissè skirt made of fine knit, that once belonged to my great-aunt. I decided to transform it into a dress by adding a black lace upper bodice.

 Skirt with country accent

 First Steps

My very first garment.

Before this I used to remake or transform old clothes. I had never made clothes entirely by myself, starting from the creation of the pattern.
It was really an unforgettable experience.

This is a grey taffeta balloon skirt. I love taffeta as any other fabric that can help create volume and has a structure. It also has a "special relationship" with light, but I have to say I prefer it in dark colours, while pastel or bright colors should be treated with care, in my opinion to avoid a very old fashioned look.
It's a very nice fabric to work with, and generally won't give you any troubles. It arely lets you down.

This picture was taken recently, I used it for my final book at school, but I made this skirt some four years ago, in 2010.
I had no idea about what to expect from the future back then.
